It is strange that this blog has been going for so long without a single mention of Mr Chips. Even stranger when you consider that reader Duncan Bloor contacted us several weeks ago to alert us to this particular Mr Chips in Birmingham. Since then, Mr Chips has been sitting patiently on my list of future posts waiting for his moment.
Well, here it is.
There are many members of the Chips family spread across the UK, but the bright and bold signage sported by this particular outlet makes it a worthy representative of the clan.
A reviewer for the Birmingham Mail opens his review in eccentric fashion:
With my nostrils flaring like a horse that’s just finished the Grand National, I couldn’t wait for a waft of vinegar fumes inside a shop that’s named after my own heart.
He goes on to look down his flaring-nostrilled nose at the owner of the establishment for wearing a Liverpool football shirt:
To my mind, a soccer top is the last thing you’d be wearing if you were serious about making a good impression with your chips.
This seems a contentious claim. One might semi-humorously accuse the reviewer of having a 'chip' on his shoulder.
Anyway, no post about Mr Chips would be complete without mention of the erstwhile animated sidekick to Roy Walker in popular quiz show Catchphrase. Here is a short video of Mr Chips miming a well-known catchphrase to comical effect:
As Roy likes to say, "It's good, but it's not right"!
